The client’s vision

Logo of BCLogia a.s., software house

The client gave us a half-finished app that the previous developer had not completed, and our task was to see it through to the end. The app is extremely demanding to run and to support with the right infrastructure, and it has to work absolutely reliably, because it will be used by operators of waste collection trucks. Part of the project is also a redesign of the app.

About the app

Digistazka T is an app for Android tablets. The driver signs in, sees their daily records and rides, and records what happened on the spot: the start and end of a ride, serviced containers, photos, a signed delivery note or fuel taken.

It solves the problem of paper records and lost data in places without internet. Everything is saved on the tablet first and sent to the server automatically as soon as possible.

Key features

  • Daily records and rides

The driver sees their daily records and rides, so they know where to go and what to expect.

  • Ride progress

A ride can be started, paused, resumed and ended, including the odometer reading.

  • Container service

A container is read with a scanner or by typing its code, and the driver adds how full it is, its quality, a note and optionally a photo.

  • Photos and signed delivery note

The driver takes a photo, enters a name, has the customer sign on the screen, and the app creates a delivery note as a PDF.

  • Fuel records

The driver enters the type of fuel, the way it was taken and the amount in litres.

  • Ride map

Rides and serviced containers are shown on a map, together with the vehicle's current position.

What was hardest

  • 1. The app works without a signal

Drivers work for hours where the internet keeps dropping. So we save every record on the tablet first and keep trying to send it to the server in short regular intervals. It is marked as sent only once it succeeds, so nothing is lost. Each kind of data, such as rides, positions, photos or refuelling, has its own queue.

  • 2. Recording the route by GPS during a ride

The app records the vehicle's position during a ride, from start to pause or end, with high accuracy. Positions are stored on the tablet, so they need not be sent immediately. The screen stays on while the driver works, so the tablet going to sleep does not interrupt measuring.

  • 3. Sign-in and device registration

A tablet is first registered under a company, and only then can drivers sign in on it. A driver must also stay signed in when there is no signal. So the app checks that the sign-in is still valid only when the internet is available, and otherwise lets the driver keep working.

  • 4. Photos and signed delivery notes

Photos from the field are large, so we shrink them before sending, which lets them go through even on a weak connection. The customer's on-screen signature is combined with the ride details into a PDF delivery note. Photos and notes wait in a queue until they are sent.

Screens

The project also includes a redesign of the app, which we are working on right now. Below are the original screens and a preview of what we are preparing.

Before: the original app

After: the new design

Placeholder frames, the new screen design is in progress.

What we did

  • Developing an app for Android tablets
  • Offline operation and automatic data sync with the server
  • Connecting to the client's server and data records
  • Handling photos, signatures and PDF delivery notes
