The client’s vision

After our earlier work together, we agreed with the client to deliver another app. The goal was to bring the existing web version into a mobile app that offers more ways to communicate with residents. It can, for example, remind them about waste collection or send them news updates.
Client websiteAbout the app
MotivatorX is a mobile app for iPhone and Android that replaces the municipality's existing web application. Residents sign in and see the same information as before on the web: who and what is registered at their address, which bins they have, when waste was collected and what they pay for it.
The app is still being built and works with sample data for now, because the municipality's system is not finished yet. It is ready to be connected to that system without redoing the screens.
The brief
Waste information is often scattered across web pages and tables that are hard to read on a phone.
The solution
It all becomes clear cards and lists, plus things the website could not do, such as collection reminders.
Key features
Waste account overview
Right after signing in you see the number of households, waste production, fees and a comparison with the municipal average.
Households and bins
Find registered households, people and assigned bins, and search through them.
Completed collections
Filter the list of collections by household, bin type and date, and see a total.
Fees by year
Fees are grouped by year and the app calculates the totals for you.
Collection calendar
Copy dates by type of waste to your phone calendar and turn on a reminder the day before.
News and documents
The municipality publishes news and documents here, for example the collection calendar as a PDF you can open on your phone.
What was hardest
1. Collection reminders without a server
The app reminds the user the evening before a collection, without any server. The phone schedules the reminders itself, always for 6 pm Czech time, one per day even when several types of waste are collected at once. Phones allow only a limited number of pending reminders, so we schedule only the nearest collections and refresh the plan every time the app starts. We ask for permission only when the user turns reminders on.
2. Export to the phone calendar
The user can write collection dates into the phone's regular calendar. They choose the types of waste and the app creates its own calendar with all-day events. On the next export it replaces the old calendar with a new one, so events are never duplicated. We ask for calendar access only after the user confirms the export, and if it is refused we explain clearly what to do next.
3. Readable for everyone
People of all ages use the app, so it has to stay usable with large text and on small phones. Text and numbers follow the phone's settings, the layout switches to a single column when needed, and both light and dark appearance work. We turned the website's tables into cards and lists for the phone.
